Basic Cleaning Tools

There are lots of cleaning tools available, but which ones do you really need and which ones really work?  Here is what we have in our cleaning caddy:

1. Green scrubbing pads like these.  You can use the generic or name brand.  I use these for all of my scrubbing: showers, tubs, sinks, stove tops, microwaves, etc.  These are great b/c they really get the scum off without too much effort.  When your done, just toss them in with your laundry and you can reuse them.

2.  Stainless Steel scrubbies like these.  Use these on non-scratch surfaces.  I use them for ovens, stoves, and glass showers.

3. Toilet brush:  there are all types and sizes of toilet brushes.  Find the one that fits your toilet.

4. Pumice Stone or lava rock:  great for getting off those nasty hard water rings in your toilet bowl.  Look in the beauty section of the grocery or discount store to find one.

5. Microfiber cloth- great for dusting and also mopping floors, washing walls, etc.

6. Cobweb duster with extension pole.  These are necessary especially if you have high ceilings.  You can use this to also clean fans, ducts, light fixtures, etc.

7. A good mop- if you have a lot of hard surface floors.  If you don't then I would suggest hand mopping.  I love the Butler Cham Mop because you can remove the head and wash it.  I have tried lots of mops out and this one is by far my favorite.  You can purchase it at Fred Meyer.

8. Bucket- for cleaning.

9. A caddy to organize all your cleaning supplies.

10.  If you have young kiddos:  I also recommend keeping some Goo-Gone and Mr. Clean  Magic Eraser on hand for any kid related disaster clean ups (gum, paint, crayon, stickers, etc)

My Favorite Products

When I first started this business "green" products were limited and only a few local stores carried them.  Luckily, now green cleaning products are more available and there are more brands to choose from.  I have tried many, many products- some work better than others.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Bom Ami- powder, polishing cleanser.  Great for sinks, tubs, toilets, pots, etc.  Martha Stewart is a fan.  The cheapest place to purchase is Fred Meyer ($0.99).

Windex with Vinegar-best product for glass, can also be used on a variety of other surfaces.  I have tried many a glass cleaner and I have to say Windex makes the best cleaner.  I was happy when they came out with their "Greenlist" Windex with Vinegar solution.  There are "greener" glass cleaners out there, but they all seem to streak.

Mrs. Meyers- what can I say?  I love almost all of her products.  Expecially. the Stainless Steel cleaner and the All- Purpose Solution.  Mrs. Meyers gives you the opportunity to match all of your cleaning products to one uniform scent.  My favorite scent is "Geranium".  These are top of the line in green products, but they are also some of the most expensive.

2nd Place Method Brand Cleaners- this line of household cleaning products are a little easier on the wallet.  I use their Wood Cleaner, Shower Cleaner, and Countertop Spray.  Target seems to carry the largest selection of Method products and at the cheapest price.

Ecover Limescale Remover- I use this product on alot of showers.  The only place I have been able to find it is at the Boise Co-op.

Check back next week for my favorite cleaning tools.

Weekly Cleaning Tip

Vinegar 101

White distilled vinegar is an essential housecleaning and laundry aid. I buy it bulk at Costco (its about $3.50 for 2 gallons).

1. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your dishwasher for sparkling clean dishes. I also like to run an empty dishwasher every month or so with 1 cup of vinegar to give it a good cleaning and to eliminate soap scum and odors.

2. Remove calcium deposits from faucets by soaking a towel or paper towel with vinegar and then wrapping it tightly around the faucet. Let it sit for several hours or overnight.

3. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your next load of laundry to (add to water at beginning of cycle along with your regular laundry detergent) to help eliminate odor and to also soften your laundry. I also like to add 1 cup of vinegar to my empty washing machine and run a cycle to clean the inside and remove odors. I like to take a scrubbing pad and scrub the inside while the water is filling up.

4. Add 1/4 cup of vinegar to gallon of water to wash non- waxed floors.

5. Boil 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water in your microwave to loosen food and deodorize.

Weekly Cleaning Tip

Smelly Drains? Try pouring about 1/4 cup of baking soda in drain or garbage disposal. Then pour about 1/2 cup of white vinegar over the baking soda. The baking soda will bubble up. Then flush drain with hot water. This will help eliminate smelly odors from your drains.

Check back next week for another fabulous cleaning tip from the OH Cleaners.
